So Since April 14, 2014 around 230 schoolgirls have been kidnapped in Nigeria by Boko Haram. It is befuddling that so many girls could be inundated by their abductors for so long with so little effort to retrieve them. It has been over a month for crying out loud! Statistics show that as more days pass since one is lost, they're likeliness of being found decreases. With so many young girls' lives being endangered and so many people having been affected by this devastating news, it is truly shocking to me that the coverage and demand for more action to be taken is lacking. These are the times for mass news coverage and 24/7 updates; but this just isn't the case and it is inexcusable.
Three weeks after the horrific event; I went to the news station CNN, commonly known for giving thorough news info on any apical news. I was disturbed to see not only were they not covering the news of these missing schoolgirls, but instead covering a party: dressing up, telling jokes and drinking. It was absolutely crazy to me: young girls are separated from their family, an entire village of Chibok is in dismay and militants are taking matters into their own hands. All the while President Obama is at a party... incomprehensible.
Around the third week since the girls have been lost a hash tag trend started, #bringourgirlsback, raising awareness to the situation. Although this trend is thoughtful, is does not bring forth any real action. So far all this motion has caused is for the White House reps to tell us "They'll do what they can".
Basically, I am confused as to why such a big issue is being undermined. Should this not matter to us? Would it matter more if these were boys? If they were white? If this occurred in an prestigious area? It's hard to ignore the idea that patriarchy might be coming into play. It makes me feel as if there is no such thing as genuine humanitarianism; it's like a well off nation thinks "I can get something out of this situation, ok I'll help!" or "Well who cares about them? What would I get out of becoming involved?".
I would like to see real steps being taken so that these girls can be rescued. I am contemplating what I shall do to help, because that's what it takes, everyone putting in an effort.
