SAE Is Proof Racism Won't Just Die

Sigma Alpha Epsilon has been headlining the news for the past few days due to a racial chant pledges were reciting on a bus.

"You can hang them from a tree
But they'll never sign with me.
There will never be a nigger at SAE"

This tune has a late 1800s-mid 1900s feel to it. But since cell phones with video recording capabilities is technology that's not even half a century old, we know this was recorded during "post-segregation" era. Yes, in this day and age we have young teens being racist. For some odd reason, many are shocked, including former members of that very University of Oklahoma chapter. John Davis and William Bruce James II are black members of this organization and resided in the SAE frat house prior. They both spoke on CNN about how they never felt an inkling of racism when being a campus member. But former member Andrew Loshe and Alpha Phi Alpha member Lawrence Ross, who also spoke on CNN are immune to the shock many are experiencing with this case. Being inclined to Greek life, they see the ugly, racial aspect of fraternities and sororities. Loshe even wrote "Confessions of An Ivy League Frat Boy" exposing the institutional pathology behind this repeated occurrence.

While speaking on CNN, Loshe admitted his chapter of SAE in Dartmouth had a racial chant as well. Parker Rice is one of the boys who was expelled from the University of Oklahoma; and in one of his statements he confesses the chant was taught to him and the other pledges. A Reddit discussion brought up that the University of Texas also had a racist chant the pledges were to recite this year. So what can we gather from all this?

Racism is taught.

There is conditioning in patriarchy. With various outlets such as these fraternities and many others, there is room for a culture of hate to flourish. Creating elite groups that allow for exclusive networking opportunities that promote white supremacy solidifies the current hierarchy. White men will always be superior and feel superior because there is a space that encourages that behavior.

This article is for those who are constantly saying "once all the old racist people die we won't have racism anymore." I used to be a victim of this mentality until I reached college. Being in Boca Raton, FL I realized that many white students, specifically Greek students, wanted nothing to do with black students on campus. SAE is one fraternity out of many, who knows which others have the same practices going on? The most disturbing part about this all is that it happens at our last educational institution.

Colleges and Universities have the perfect opportunity to break the mold of inequality. The can promote unity in ways most other institutions can't. With the young and innovative minds of students, so many strides towards an equal America can be established, yet they rather push those same hateful ideals onto these future leaders of society. You can already tell by David Boren's excuse of the necessity to be cautious when dealing with a punishment for these students because of the federal law and constitution, that they'll probably be back on campus. People keep getting a slap on the wrist for hate crimes because their prosecutors are filled with hate themselves. The false sympathy for Mike Brown and Eric Garner and averting of the questions of expulsion for those on the bus reciting that racist chant from Boren is annoying. He patted himself on the back for standing by those protesting  on OU campus, but this is not an isolated incident. We cannot expel two students and suspend others and get real change. Boren just covered his tracks enough to not appear insensitive.

Racism is taught. Racism is also encouraged. When it's not being directly promoted is it in fact being overlooked. This is why racism will never die. Institutional pathology is definitely an undermined crisis that happens on a regular  basis. Universities will continue to leave room for it with the current operations of Greek life. The real way racism will die is by teaching equality. Until we do that racist people will teach their offspring to be racist and America will still deal with race issues.

So basically...

Like stop with the being shocked when you see a racist video on YouTube thing. That nature is alive and thriving. We need to stop being uncomfortable when talking about racism. White guilt needs to no longer silence us. Not everyone feels they need to say something about race, but it is literally controlling our society because those in power are racist. They want the future power holders to be racist as well. That's how they keep their capital. All the gullibility and naivety seriously needs to stop. We can't anticipate an equal world when the structure of it works towards the complete opposite. Wake up!
