Mother's Day Unchained: Tallahassee Dream Defenders

http://www.dreamdefenders.org/blackbrunchsmothers

Above is the link to an action, movement, performance and more than anything an outcry from black youth, specifically the Tallahassee, FL Dream Defenders.

A group of bold and unapologetic students and activists interrupted privileged society. They got the apathetic black folks attention. They disturbed the peace as their peace has been robbed from them. From us. Especially from our mothers. Countless women of color bury their children. Not due to natural cause, but from police targeting and extinguishing black people.

This video readily available on YouTube shows about 15+ Dreamers standing in a restaurant, being heard. They spoke about how every 28 hours that a black person is killed by the police or a vigilante. An unarmed black person. Most times a fleeing black person.

They called the names of the fallen. They called the names of the mothers left behind.

Mother's Day has already been commercialized to be about capitalizing off vanities such as flowers and chocolate; it doesn't speak about the mothers in anguish. It doesn't show the mothers in oppression. It doesn't allow space for the mothers who cannot celebrate because they mourn their children. This is the culture American society has created for Mother's Day when in retrospect, America leaves many of its mothers pained and despaired. It is a contradiction to the holiday to have so many mothers childless because their justice system has failed them; their system killed their child and named them "thug". Their system left them powerless' this cannot continue and Dream Defenders called this out with this action today.

To see these Dreamers standing tall, voices raised, higher than the white managers who tried everything they could to kick them out but firm they stood, courageously breaking boundaries for the sake of black humanity was transcendental. Tears were brought to my eyes as I watched them call out the names of those who died from police brutality. The list was so long; that list continues. This is why we cannot remain silent. And Tallahassee Dream Defenders knew so. I commend them for what they did this Mother's Day and I hope for less mothers to have to experience what the Mother of Trayvon Martin, Tamar Rice, Tanisha Anderson and so many others have.

Watch the video; share the video; feel empowered.
