Now if you are familiar with "Fashion Police" then you already know Guiliana has been doing the most to try to be mean/funny like Joan Rivers (R.I.P) was. However she definitely put her foot in her mouth with her comment "...she looks like she smells like patchouli oil, or maybe weed..."
First off, that was racist. Period. To associate dreads, an African hairstyle derived from our hair matting up, to the scent of weed is stereotyping. The tweet Zendaya wrote was brilliant to rebuttal Guiliana's ignorant remarks.
I'll just leave this here. Oh such a refined and intelligent young woman Zendaya is. She summed up the beauty of locs and the irrelevance of the remark. Guiliana apologized via twitter and on air after co-host Kelly Osbourne threatened to leave the show. My thing is frankly I'm tired of white people saying some racist comment and thinking an apology mends the wound. What needs to happen is they need to understand black culture and be conscientious of their superiority complex.
Kylie Jenner wore faux locs prior to this incident and was praised for it. Critics said they were "boho", not smelly. Racism is exercised now through negative connotations to black culture. With western beauty being portrayed as the only beauty, everything else is terrorized. When a black person embraces their culture it is ugly while when black culture is appropriated it is glamorized. It just shows where this country is still at with black being beautiful. Also the reappearing foot in these racists mouths needs to go away indefinitely. That is why Paula Dean, Guiliana Rancic and many others keep being racist and just apologizing. Don't shoot me then put a band aide over the wound!
